Recently my old friend Matt Patterson invited me to join him on a backpacking adventure through Joshua Tree National Park as part of a photography series he is doing at parks all over the West.
We tromped out into the wilderness for 3 days of desert hiking along the California Riding and Hiking Trail, and witnessed some of the more eerily beautiful terrain I’ve ever seen. We passed through stunning groves of Joshua Trees and climbed unexplainably giant rock piles; the whole park feeling a bit “other worldly”.
The adventure was physically taxing (40 miles through desert mountains with a loaded pack had me sleeping soundly each night) and mentally clarifying (silence, stars and zero ties to the real-world save for Matt’s terrible rendition of Fetty Wap’s Trap Queen); all in all a beautiful experience.
