No One is from San Diego

They say that no one is “from” San Diego. That it is a city comprised entirely of transplants, people from somewhere else.

Recently I learned that this was not actually true and it was the best discovery ever. Why? Because San Diego natives are experts in doing life here.

Here are a few tips I have picked up from true San Diegans.

  1. Always take the bikes

Beach cruisers are by far a superior mode of transportation. Baskets and cup holders make them perfect for extended cruises along the coast, small shopping trips, of for bringing home your leftovers after dinner. There is also nothing more fun than riding around like a sunshiney bicycle gang with your squad. It took me a few tries to get used to riding one (so far I’ve hit a pole, careened down a hill towards traffic, and toppled over in the middle of a busy sidewalk) but now I am sold.

  2. There’s no such thing as too many hobbies

Surfing, running, painting, biking, kite flying, paddle boarding, sailing, yoga… Why choose just one or two? My guess is the year round summer weather is what causes this phenomenon, but every native I meet seems to do ALL of the hobbies.

  3. Never stop appreciating how beautiful this place is

One of the most surprising things to me about San Diego natives, is that they are still excited about how beautiful this place is. I am in awe of it everyday, as I walk home from work against a rainbow sunset, or run along the coastal cliffs. But it seems that that doesn’t wear off. They appreciate this beautiful place and take advantage of every sunshiny moment it gives them.
